MR. P

Grand Haven 6/4/04

BACK

We have a big tournament that we wanted to prefish for.  Prefishing is important to try to locate a school of fish and get a program together to catch them during the tournaments.  We usually like to get 4-5 guys on the boat to prefish in order to help out, set some lines, and have a good time.

Well, I had promised Mr. P that we would take him out on Lake Michigan at least on time this year and hopefully get him onto a big school of kings.  He had been bugging us for a couple of years and we never had a free weekday together to get out and catch some fish.  Finally he got a day off of work and decided to make the trip at Grand Haven with us.

We got kind of a late start on this Friday morning.  But Mr. P was a quick learner on setting rods down to their desired depths.

And he helped us out with setting up the planar boards way out.

After we set get everything set, Mr. P is like a hawk watching those rods waiting for a bite.  He is really hard to beat to a rod and when he gets to one first, he rarely hands it off.

It was not long before we had a rigger pop and Mr. P was on it fast.  He really likes to test the tackle and tightens the drag right up and power winches the fish in.  How he does not have more break-offs, I have no idea.

Things got slow for a while and Mr. P started get a bit upset.  He was upset about missing a days pay at work and hoped to wack a bunch of kings.  He finally decided to take matter into his own hands and start picking his own lures to use.

After boating a few fish, Mr. P decided that it was time to take a load off and have a cold one since it was not a tournament.  Everyone knows that in the larger tournaments, no drinking during fishing hours.

Mr. P then decided to take a shot at driving.  He had a hunch that the larger kings were in 100 FOW and headed the boat to that depth.

When Mr. P was driving we finally got a fish on that he did not get to the rod first.  He had never netted a fish at the back of a trolling boat before so we let him take a stab at it.

Mr. P was am excellent mate to have on the boat.  We are now thinking about adding him to our tournament crew.

He also cleaned the deck and if he ran a boat, I bet it would be a tight ship.

We had a minor boat problem while out on the water.  We sprung a small leak in our exhaust system that was spraying water directly onto the distributor cap.  We made a few phone calls and found the part that we needed in Whitehall.  So we pulled lines and ran it to get it.  We also took a time out for lunch and needed to fuel up before we made the long run back to Grand Haven.  The gas dock attended was very friendly and Mr. P was enjoying her company.

We pulled out of Whitehall at around 4 o'clock and we were a couple fish short of our limit.  Mr. P wanted to fish some more so we went out and set up again.

It took us a while to get the rest of our limit and it was time for a ride past to port.  One of the great things about fishing the west coast of Michigan is its great sunsets.  Here is Mr. P enjoying the view.

And finally two images of Mr. P, our crew, and catch.
